What we advise

Traveling to/in Costa Rica

1. Valid passport, (at least for six months) for additional information, please review: http://www.rree.go.cr/promocion/index.php?stp=136&langtype
Also remember to bring a copy of your passport.

2. If you are driving in Costa Rica, please remember to bring your up-dated driver license and a valid credit card; all rent a car companies request a print out of your credit card or a cash deposit.

3. Remember to save around $26.00 for airport departure tax (payable in cash or VISA card only).

4. Local taxes are 23% on food and service and 16.39% on room rates.

5. Working hours are usually 08:00 to 05:00 pm for private businesses and
08-4:00 pm for public offices.

6. Electricity is 110 volts.

7. Water is safe to drink in most of the country, including San Jose. Ask the front desk in hotels outside San Jose.

8. Weather conditions: Costa Rica is located 10 degrees north of the Equator, and has no seasons as found in the temperate zones. The temperatures are the same all year long with small variations. In the Central Valley, where the capital city San Jose is located, the temperature average is 21ºC ( 74ºF ). On the coast, the temperatures vary from 24ºC to 30ºC degrees. During the months of December, January and February the temperature may decrease 3ºC or 5ºC degrees due to North winds.

9. Telephone services: Costa Rica has direct dial service to almost every country in the world. In most hotels you can make international direct calls. Though calls within Costa Rica are relatively cheap, calling long-distance can work out very expensive. You can call collect to virtually any foreign country from any phone or payphone in Costa Rica; simply dial 09 or 116 to get an English-speaking operator. You can call directly to AT&T: 0800 011 4114, MCI: 0800 012 2222, SPRINT: 0800 013 0123.

10. Health System: Costa Rica has the most efficient and developed medical services in the Central American. The country has one of the lowest infant mortality rates in Latin America, and a life expectancy of 74 and 76 years respectively for men and women. It has a very low risk of malaria diseases or any other type of tropical of diseases. Vaccination is unnecessary.


11. Airports: The Juan Santamaria International Airport in the Province of Alajuela, is located at 17 kilometers ( 10 miles ) from the capital city. The taxis have an established fare of US $14.00 to take you downtown San Jose.

There are convenient flight connections to different places, especially to the United States of America.

There is another International Airport Daniel Oduber Quiros in the city of Liberia, Guanacaste province.

There is also an airport downtown San Jose for small planes and local flights, Tobias Bolanos airport located in Pavas residential area.
